Expansions
of the period form include extensions of phrases as well as repetition
of phrases and repetition of the period as a whole. Immediately beyond
the period form in size are the double period, phrase group and period
group.
Original uniform period = 4 bar antecedent + 4 bar consequent
Repetition
of the Period as a Whole
1. Frequently a composer may wish the emphasise
a strong motivic function by repeating the entire
period or present a "double period" (see below).
In orchestral works this procedure is common and
usually corresponds to a change in texture and
color.

The Double Period
The double period is a unit of
two periods, or four phrases, in coherent succession.
It often has a half cadence at the end of the
second phrase and a full cadence at the end of
the fourth phrase
1. Parallel Double Period = First and Third
phrases are identical or similar
2. Contrasting Double Period = First and Third
phrases are dissimilar
