VI. Enlargements & combinations of period form

Chapter Vi: Enlargements and combinations of Period forms

Expansions of the period form include extensions of phrases as well as repetition of phrases and repetition of the period as a whole. Immediately beyond the period form in size are the double period, phrase group and period group.

Original uniform period = 4 bar antecedent + 4 bar consequent

Extensions of Phrases

1. Antecedent Phrase: as introduction

The extension of an antecedent phrase within a period is found most often in the form of an introduction to the phrase:

2. Consequent Phrase: Extension at the end of the phrase

3. Consequent Phrase: Extensions within the phrase

Repetition of Phrases

1. Repetition of Antecedent Phrase: Period = Antecedent + Antecedent + Consequent

Comparitively Rare. In most cases when an antecedent phrase is repeated it is in conjunction with a repetition of the consequent phrase within the same period.

2. Repetition of Consequent Phrase: Period = Antecedent + Consequent + Consequent

Much more frequent than the repetition of the antecedent, the repeated consequent is more apt to be characterized by some modification.

3. Repetition of Antecedent and Consequent Phrase: Period = Antecedent + Antecedent + Consequent + Consequent

Very rare and must not be confused with the "Double Period"

Repetition of the Period as a Whole

1. Frequently a composer may wish the emphasise a strong motivic function by repeating the entire period or present a "double period" (see below). In orchestral works this procedure is common and usually corresponds to a change in texture and color.

Question: What Kind of Period does this form: Parallel, Contrasting, or Modified Parallel?

The Double Period

The double period is a unit of two periods, or four phrases, in coherent succession. It often has a half cadence at the end of the second phrase and a full cadence at the end of the fourth phrase

1. Parallel Double Period = First and Third phrases are identical or similar
2. Contrasting Double Period = First and Third phrases are dissimilar
