About Double Jeopardy

The final will cover the four sections of the orchestra:

Strings & Harp, Winds, Brass and Percussion, Piano and Celesta.

You have already been tested on everything but the percussion, piano and celesta. For those of you that were not satisfied with your grades on any of the exams or quizes you will have an opportunity to improve your grade on the final. Here is how it works:

Each of the previous exams or quizes had approximately the following point values:

Strings 237
Winds 181
Brass 97

Final = approx 300 points The Final WILL NOT be weighted. It is long and very comprehensive. You may have ONE double-sided 3X5 note card.

Total Points for Semester = approx 815

Remember, On the final, a portion of the percussion, Piano, Celesta will NOT be extra credit

Assuming you were pleased with the results of all of your quizes or exams during this course,
To determine your final grade you simply divide your cumulative point total on all exams including the final by the total number of points and you will come out with a percentage that will translate to your grade.

For example: Say your grades during the semester were:

Strings 205
Winds 160 (Weighted)
Brass 77
Final 250

Your cumulative point total = 692
Total points for semester = 815
Your Grade 84.5% = B

Assuming you were NOT pleased with the results of any of your quizes or exams during this course you may opt to have that portion of the final count as DOUBLE JEOPARDY.

In double jeopardy, the section you opt to take as double jeopardy will completely replace your previous grade for that section.

To determine your final grade I will first look at your percentage grade for that section on the final. I will then apply that percentage to the total point value for that sections previous exam or quiz. Your final grade will then be the resultant cumulative point total including the final divided by the total number of points.

For example: Say your grades during the semester were:

Strings 150
Winds 160 (Weighted)
Brass 77
Final 250

And you decide you want to take the Strings portion of the Final as Double Jeopardy.
You studied hard and received a 92% on that portion of the exam that covered the Strings.

Your New String Exam grade = .92(237) = 218

Your New Semester Grades are

Strings 218
Winds 160 (Weighted)
Brass 77
Final 250

Your New cumulative point total = 705
Total points for semester = 815
Your Grade 86.5% = B

If you choose to Double Jeopardy any portion of the final I will need you to send me an email by 8:00 AM Monday Dec 12 that says the following.

"{your name} wishes to take {name of section of exam you want to take as double jeopardy ie "strings", "winds", "brass"} as a double jeopardy on the final. I understand that the grade I receive for this portion of the final exam will entirely replace my previous quiz or exam for that section. I also undertand that by opting double jeopardy, I may not revert to my earlier grade for this section. "

Send the email to abrick@stevens.edu

If I do not receive an email from you, I will assume you are NOT taking any section double jeopardy.
Please note: The final is long and comprehensive. It is more towards the difficulty level of the wind exam than the brass exam and it will NOT be weighted. Please consider your decision very carefully.
