Microstructure Prediction in Hot Forging of Turbine Engine Disks

Project Sponsor: NASA National Space Grant and Fellowship Program, New Jersey Space Grant Consortium, Industry - University Cooperative Research Program

Principal Investigator: Sven K. Esche

Graduate Research Assistant: Qiang Yu

Amount: $25,000

Project Duration: September 1, 1998 - August 31, 1999

Project Summary: A methodology for the prediction of the microstructure in hot forged aerospace parts will be developed. This methodology will be based on the correlation of the grain sizes measured in experiments with the pertinent stress, strain and temperature data resulting from FEM simulations. It will take into account the following factors: initial billet geometry, final product shape, microstructure of initial material, forging sequence, and forging process conditions.
