Planning of a Multi-institutional Initiative to Assess the Viability of Online Laboratories in Undergraduate Education

Project Sponsor: The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Principal Investigators: Sven K. Esche and Constantin Chassapis

Amount: $26,120

Project Duration: July 1, 2002 - December 31, 2002

Project Summary: The objective of this project funded by The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is to plan for a multi-institutional initiative to demonstrate the value of remote laboratories in undergraduate engineering education. This project is part of the Sloan Foundation’s strategic interest in introducing a complete undergraduate online engineering program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Both Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed remote laboratory modules for mechanical and electrical engineering, respectively. Corresponding pilot implementations in several existing courses both at SIT and MIT have demonstrated excellent learning effectiveness. The initiative to be planned would use these remote laboratories and engage a total of 10 partners in a multi-dimensional project to demonstrate that remote experimentation can provide a laboratory experience of equal or higher quality compared with traditional laboratories to undergraduate students at educational institutions of various profiles.
