This is part three of a four semester sequence.

Course Objectives:

  • Extend ability to read and sight sing beyond treble and bass clefs to Alto and Tenor Clefs in mixed mode and simple chromatic Solfeg
  • Expand beyond note-for-note 4 part choral writing through the implementation of melodic and rhythmic figurations.
  • Develop analytical ability to re-interpret linear structures as vertical sonorities and visa-versa
  • Demonstrate clear understanding of leading tone seventh chords and advanced usages of dominant and intermediary seventh chords.  Apply such understanding to written work
  • Expand understanding of applied dominance to include other applied leading tone sonorities whose target extends beyond simple dominant harmony thereby facilitating more remote diatonic modulations.  Apply such understanding to written work.  .
  • Refine counterpoint skills by mastering 4th and 5th species counterpoint
  • Integrate concepts of all 5 species counterpoint to written work through a comparison of melodic and rhythmic figurations in the standard literature.
  • Analyze large-scale musical structures including an introduction to Binary and Ternary forms.  Present structural foundations for Sonata form.
