Course Objectives:

  • Course’s Objective: The Objective of Music Composition is to
     
    • Provide the student with a complete compositional skill set including a comprehensive analysis of form and structure. The course will be presented with a disposition towards neo-classicism that can be effectively implemented beyond the students academic tenure.
     
    • Introduce the essential elements of compositional techniques including but not limited to:
    1.      Motive, Phrase, and Period
    2.      Binary & Ternary Form
    3.      Full sonata form
    4.      Concerto, Ostinato, Variations & Suite

     

    • Present a formal analysis of compositional techniques that may be generally applied to tonal or atonal harmonic principals that include but are not limited to:
    1.      Diatonic & Chromatic mirror inversions.
    2.      Retrograde
    3.      Retrograde Inversion
    4.      Fugual and Cannonic imitation
    5.      Metrical Shifting and displacement
    6.      Altered Function of Foreground, Background and Middleground.
